Terrorism in the Middle East Terrorism in the Middle East With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990's and the cold war over, the international community seemed to be on the threshold of an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity.The demand of oil in the Middle East is highly needed, which creates a concern for the Middle East in giving their oil to foreigners. In addition, Iran poses a problem to the U.S. regarding the use of nuclear weapons, hatred towards Israel, and is a state sponsor of terrorism (Del Priore, 27 Mar. 2013).There are two contrasting theories that compete to debate the causes of terrorism in the Middle East, the first one focuses on the root causes, which are poverty, ignorance, and lack of political expression which causes for terrorist groups to be formed, this theory is called the “demand side” of terrorism.
Why was the Middle East ripe for the development of terrorist groups? Why did it all come together there and result in such violence? Are all Middle Eastern countries involved? If not, why not? Even today woman, like Ayat al-Akhras, are fleeing the West and heading to the Middle Eastern “wasteland” in order to become “terrorists” and aid the Palestinian state in its efforts to survive (Giovanni).
